Review
- 4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. Galatians 4:4-5 NKJV
- Fullness: pleroma (play-row-mah); Strong’s #4138: Full number, full complement, full measure, copiousness, plenitude, that which has been completed. The word describes a ship with a full cargo and crew, and a town with no empty houses. Pleroma strongly emphasizes fullness.
- We’ve talked about how God was present and involved in history on a very large scale and how he worked all things to the good.
- Christmas is a reminder that God is:
- 1.) Sovereign
- 2.) Faithful
- 3.) Present and involved
- Christmas is a reminder that God is:
- “My times are in Your hands…” Psalms 31:15 NKJV
- We’ve looked at Mary and being pregnant with purpose. We’ve looked at John and talked about expectation and offense: how not to let your expectations offend you and miss your due season. We ended with this:
- 9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Galatians 6:9 NKJV
- But the good news is God doesn’t just tell us WHAT to do but also EMPOWERS US to do it.
- 9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Galatians 6:9 NKJV
- So, this week, we look at Jesus. Even Jesus had to learn about due season…He learned to deal with it so He could help us with it.
Identification and Supplication
- 41 His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. 43 When they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And Joseph and His mother did not know it; 44 but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day’s journey, and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45 So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him. 46 Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. 48 So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.” 49 And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” 50 But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them. 51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. Luke 2:41-52 NKJV
- Jesus knows what it’s like to be a kid (He grew in favor with God and man):
- Being the new kid (moving back from Egypt)
- Having to go to school
- Bullies
- Puberty
- Rebellion (left His parents for the temple)
- Due season was one of the lessons He had to learn. He was perfect, but He kind of jumped the gun, and God had to show Him that He had to trust in God’s timing.
- 4 Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” John 2:4 NKJV
- 6 Then Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil. 8 You go up to this feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, for My time has not yet fully come.” John 7:6 -8 NKJV
- The time for vindication (His brothers didn’t believe.)
- 30 Therefore they sought to take Him; but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come. John 7:30 NKJV
- The time for His sacrifice
- Jesus knows what it’s like to be a kid (He grew in favor with God and man):
- That’s neat, Jesus had to learn this lesson too, but…here’s why:
- 17 Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. Hebrews 2:17 NKJV
- The whole purpose of Jesus coming in the flesh was to identify WITH US and AS Us so He could aid us.
- 4 reasons Jesus HAD to identify with us as us, and one builds upon the other until we see God’s ultimate purpose.
- 1. To show mercy
- Actively compassionate (you feel their hurt in your heart); a deep awareness of the suffering of another coupled with the desire to relieve it
- 2. To be faithful = trustworthy
- 3. To make propitiation = to turn away wrath by satisfaction (He makes up the difference.)
- All of this leads to the main purpose which is in the next verse always read the next verse)!
- 1. To show mercy
- 18 For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted. Hebrews 2:18 NKJV
- 4. Aid = to run to the cry (of those in need)
- 17 Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. Hebrews 2:17 NKJV
- Last week we talked about not letting time try trust…
- 12 that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Hebrews 6:12 NKJV
- That’s easy to say but how do we do that? We run to Him and lean on Him…
- 14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:14-16 NKJV
- 12 that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Hebrews 6:12 NKJV
